John Clelland, son of John and Emma Cleland, was born in Virginia February 23, 1809 and Died April 11, 1889 In Jackson, Howard, Indiana, age 80 years, one month, and 19 days. He had 4 siblings: James Clelland, III, Rebecca Clelland, Mary A Clelland, and Massie Clelland. He also had a step-sister, Drusilla Clelland, and step-brother Zackwell Clelland. His father married Sarah (Sally) Morgan when his mother died.

John married 1st to Lucinda Gardner in Union County, Indiana on June 21, 1833 and they had three children: Ann Louisa (b. 1834), Sarah (b. 1836), and James (b. 1838). Then he married, secondly, Emily Smith (Ridgeway) on September 6, 1841 in Henry County, Indiana. Together they had seven children: Mary, Martha, Ira, Emily, Wilson, Arminta, and John Charles.

Emily Smith, his second wife, had previously been married to Noah Ridgeway in Henry County, Indiana on February 10, 1839, and they had a daughter by the name of Saphronia Ridgeway.


He died in Jackson, Howard, Indiana.
