Allen, the third child and second son of William Alexander Gordon, Jr., attended the Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA; the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA; and Columbia University Law School, New York City, NY.
He then went to Pittsburgh, PA, and joined the law firm of Gordon, Smith, Buchanan, and Scott, practicing law until the end of his life. George B. Gordon, the senior partner, was his first cousin once removed.
Late in life, at the age of fifty, he married Alice Walton Scully of Pittsburgh. They had two daughters, Ann Caperton and Alice Blake.
