William A. Gordon Claimed By Death
Oldest Active Practitioner of D.C. Bar Dies After Three-Day Illness.
William Alexander Gordon, well known member of the District of Columbia bar and a member of one of the oldest families of old Georgetown, the oldest active practitioner of the District of Columbia bar, a member of the first law class graduating from Columbia College and the oldest living graduate of its academic department, died yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the family home, 3013 Q Street, Georgetown, aged eighty-two years.

He had been ill only three days. The day before being taken ill he was actively engaged in his work as an attorney with his firm, Gordon & Gordon. His death was due to heart trouble. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church, Georgetown, 31st and O Streets, at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J.W.W. Blake, rector, officiating. The interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, where many of the ancestors of Mr. Gordon lie buried. The pallbearers will be members of the family and vestrymen of Christ Church. Mr. Gordon was a native of Georgetown. His grandfather, James Blake, was the first mayor of Washington.

He served in Confederate army as a lieutenant, first as adjutant of the 1st Confederate Engineers and later on the staff of General Pickett. In 1869 Mr. Gordon, with his brother, J. Holdsworth Gordon, formed the law firm of Gordon & Gordon, attorneys and counselors at law, which has continued ever since, the firm handling business in volume and importance second to no firm in the city. Mr. Gordon gave much of his spare time to the study of the history of old Georgetown and on that subject he was an accepted authority.

Many Business Connections.
He had been a member of the board of vestrymen of Old Christ Episcopal Church, where he and the Gordon family had been communicants for many years. He was a member of Camp No. 171, United Confederate Veterans and was a Past Commander of that camp. He was at the time of his death president of the Washington Safe Deposit Company and a member of the board of directors of a number of other of the large business and financial concerns of the city. The Confederate Veterans will be represented at the funeral by a delegation.

Mr. Gordon is survived by four children - Mrs. G.L. Nicholson, John Blake Gordon, sanitary engineer for the District of Columbia, Erskine Gordon, all of this city and Allen T.C. Gordon of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Gordon, who was Miss Harriett Caperton, daughter of the late United States Senator Caperton of West Virginia, died in 1908
