Death of George Covert

It is our painful duty to announce the death of one of our most venerable and esteemed citizens, Deacon George Covert, who died at three o’clock this morning at his residence in this village, at the ripe old age of 78. Mr. Covert has been an invalid for the past two years, and it is supposed that his death was hastened by the sudden decease of his wife, which occurred from an attack of pneumonia on Friday last.

Mr. Covert was born in Greene county, New York, where his youth was passed. In early manhood he emigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he resided for several years, and subsequently at Albany and Auburn in this State. He became a resident of Ithaca about 1844, and for many years was one of our most active and enterprising business men. The great flood of 1857 swept away the accumulation of many years of a laborious business life, and completely destroyed a lucrative and extensive business, in which he was at the time engaged.

In all that makes a good citizen, no man ranked higher than George Covert. He was a devoted Christian, and a man of the most exemplary habits, and the highest integrity. He was for many years a member of the Board of Village Trustees and Overseer of the Poor for the town of Ithaca.

In his domestic life, he was a devoted husband and a kind father. For more than fifty-seven years, he had enjoyed a happy and contented married life, and is now called to his Heavenly Father within six days of the departure of his faithful and devoted wife. All of the children, nine in number, are living. For nearly or quite fifty years, Deacon Covert has been a consistent member of the Baptist Church.

The funeral will take place at his late residence on East Buffalo street, on Friday, the 19th inst., at 2 o’clock.
