Bartholomew "Barton" Boteler was educated in the "subscription schools" of his day, and in early life became a clerk in a store at Petersville, Frederick County, Md. In 1853 he opened a store in Brownsville, to the management of which he gave his time until 1856, when he rented the store, and purchased the farm on which William Boteler now resides. This he sold in 1872 and removed to Baltimore. Two years later he retired from business; he died in 1879. Barton Boteler married January 28, 1835 to Mary Garrott, who died in 1899. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, and Mrs Boteler of the Baptist Church. They had seven children, as follows:
1. Francis Marion, a merchant, who married Mary E Boteler, and died in 1892, in the house of Dr. Yourtee, leaving one son, Francis B., assistant engineer at the Maryland House of Correction, where J J Moore, a relative is superintendent.
2. Adelia, who married Thomas W Clagett, of Montgomery County, Md
3. George W., deceased, was a physician at Waynesboro, Pa., was married and left seven children.
4. Annie R. M., wed Dr. John Tilghman Yourtee
5. Josephine M., who married Capt. Daniel W. Lapham, of the 9th NY Cavalry, and has three sons Edward B., who has been since he was twelve years old, a clerk in the Seth Thomas clockworks; Thomas, a clerk in New York, who saw service in the 77th M S Heavy Artiller, Regular Army; and Wade, who was a soldier in the 71st NY Infantry in the Philippine war.
6. Susan F., who married Willington Hutchens, now deceased, but who was for years in a bank, in the oil business, and in merchant business in Baltimore; their children were Mabel, Wellington, deceased, and Lovell B., who studied civil engineering; is a clerk in Hagerstown.
7. Alice, who resides in Brownsville.
