Jacob John Westvig, at the age of eighteen, was the first member of the family to emigrate to America. A cabinet maker by trade, he settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and became adept at interior wood finishing, ornate stairway construction, etc.* At one time, Jacob's vocation was interrupted by a siege of typhoid fever, which forced him to spend part of a summer convalescing at brother Enok's. From there, Jacob went to Chicago for a short stay, then he returned to Minneapolis.

On March 12, 1886, Jacob married Andrina Williams, from Blanfjord, Norway. One of their children, Alice, died in infancy.

Jacob John died at Rochester, Minnesota, on March 12, 1924. He is buried in lot 71, section 16, number 7 at Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis.

* In the Minneapolis City Directory of 1915, Jacob's residence was listed as 917 Twelfth Avenue North.
