Born in Minneapolis, Arthur Edgar Westvig has been defined as being unlike the Westvigs in appearance, perhaps taking after his mother's side of the family. In his younger days, he served in the United States Navy, as well as living a short while in Nebraska.

Garnet Claypool and Arthur Westvig were married in Moberly Baptist church on November 1, 1924. Their residence was at 923 Rollins, Moberly, Missouri. Tall and slender, described as dynamic, Arthur managed the J. C. Penney store in Moberly, Missouri, for about twenty years. He was a charter member of the Moberly Chamber of Commerce.

Arthur and his wife are buried in the Memorial Garden Cemetery, Moberly, Missouri.
