Arthur S. Anderson was the eldest of seven children born to his Swedish immigrant parents, Andrew and Anna Sophia Anderson, while the Andersons were living and farming in Deuel County, South Dakota. When Arthur was about 13 years old, his family moved from South Dakota to Mille Lacs County, Minnesota. At an early age he was given a camera by his mother. This began his relationship to the world of photography. In 1912, Art Anderson moved to Minneapolis to work in a portrait studio, and he worked for a good portion of his life as a photographer. Art was married to Evelyn Hilder Wicklund on Oct. 23, 1920. In 1929, they had their one son, Donn R. Anderson.
In later life, the family moved from Minneapolis to River Falls, Wisconsin. It is in River Falls that Art Anderson dies in 1970, at age 81.
