He was born in Liberty, Casey County, Kentucky to Jonathan Turpin (1829-1917) and Nancy Jane Lane(1820-1908).

He married Ileta Mullins (1875-1915)on 2 July 1891. He was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he and wife were baptised on 19 Aug 1906 in Bradfordsville, Kentucky. Ileta is buried in Kentucky. He later married Mary Ann Campbell (1893-1963) on 31 May 1920. He was the father of 8 children with Ileta and 4 children and two step children with Mary Ann.

He had 4 older brothers and one older sister.
