5th Lord Saint John of Basing, Hampshire. Knight of Halnaker, Walberton, Sussex, of Newbury, Kent.

Son and heir to Sir Luke de Poynings and Isabel de Saint John, grandson of Thomas de Poynings and Agnes de Rokesley, Sir Hugh de Saint John and Mirabel Wake.

Husband of Joan le Strange, daughter of Sir Roger le Strange and Aline Arundel, daughter of sir Edmund, Earl of Arundel. They married before 1376 and had four sons and one daughter; Luke, Sir Hugh, Luke 2nd, Thomas and Margaret, the wife of Sir John Brewes and a Sir Wykham. Joan died in 1398.++ Grandfather of Constance through Hugh who would marry Sir John Paulet.

Secondly, he was the husband of Philippe Mortimer, the daughter of Sir Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March and Philippe, daughter of Lionel of Antwerp, Earl of Ulster. She was the widow of Sir John de Hastings who died by 1389, and Sir Richard de Arundel, Earl of Arundel, beheaded 1397. They married before 06 Dec 1398, the date of a letter concerning their marriage, and had no issue. Philippe died at Halnaker, West Sussex, in 1401.

Thirdly, he was the husband of Maud Mauley, the widow of John Halsham of Coombe. They were married between 16 April 1415 and Jan 1420, and had one son and one daughter; Thomas 2nd and Isabel.

It is believed Sir Thomas served with the Duke of Lancaster during his march across France in 1373. Thomas was the first to charge Pevensey Castle in 1398, retaking it for the King. He had a licence for his absence for three years to travel to the Holy Land in 1400, and received the manor of Winterbourne Stoke, Wiltshire from his cousin in 1413.

Thomas died testate 07 March 1429, buried with is second wife, and Maud died 14 June 1453.
