1886 Indian Census, Washington Territory, Reservation Nisqually, Agency Nisqually & Skokomish

February 15, 1886, Monday, Daily Evening News, Tacoma, Washington Territory
Warrants were issued out of Justice Lawrence's court, on Saturday, upon complaint of Samuel Keady, against Roderick Byrd and Catherine Woodworth, a half-breed, charging them with adultery and lewd and lascivious cohabitation. The parties were arrested and will have a hearing before Justice Lawrence at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The woman lost her husband three months ago. It is claimed that this illegal intercourse has been going on for more than a year.

PRIVATE NUPTIALS. A Marriage Certificate Saves two Parties from the Penitentiary.
The two parties, Roderick Byrd and Catharine Woodworth, whose arrest for adultery, etc. was mentioned in yesterday's News, came before Justice Lawrence, this morning, when it was found that a new and complicating feature had entered into the proceedings, which resulted in a different termination of the case. During the evening, while confined in jail, meditating upon their condition and the probable sequence of a conviction for the offense charged, a new scheme was devised. Judge Wickersham was called in for counsel and assistance, and with the consent of all parties, the two prisoners were furnished with a marriage certificate. This document being produced in court, by agreement of the complaining witness and prosecuting officer, the case was dropped on condition of the payment of the costs, amounting to some $82. The parties were remanded to jail until this amount should be deposted with the court.

Age from 1900 Washington census. Death certificate has no year of birth, only Oct., but gives his age as 82.
