He started driving a school bus for Highland in 1937, his route covered Doe Hill, McDowell, Seldom Scene & Crab Run. Averaging 46 miles a day. He retired in June 1965.

J. Walter Botkin, 90, of Doe Hill died Friday morning, Aug. 10, 1990 at King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton. He was born at Doe Hill, a son of G. Lee and Naomi Blagg Botkin. On July 28, 1940, he married Emma Simmons, who survives. He was a member of Doe Hill United Methodist Church. He had been a Highland County school bus driver for 26 years and was a livestock trucker and a mail carrier. In addition to his widow, suriving are two daughters, Lucy Turner and Ellen Zimmerman, both of Staunton; and a brother, Marvin Botkin of McDowell. A service was conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Doe Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Steve McMillion, with burial at the Doe Hill Cemetery
