August 25, 1915 â€" May 26, 2013 Donald L. Carlson, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 26, 2013. The son of the late Mary and Oscar Carlson, Don was born in Oil City, Pa. His family moved to Erie shortly afterwards. He graduated with distinction from Academy high school at age 16. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and later became a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania. At the beginning of World War II, Don joined the Army Air Force, and was assigned to teach celestial navigation to bomber crews in training. After learning in 1943 that he would be stationed state-side, he and his fiancée, Mildred May, were married in Cleveland. The couple moved to Davis Monthan Field, an air base in Arizona. Following the war, they lived briefly in Chicago before moving to Erie. Don worked for 35 years on a number of engineering teams at General Electric. He served as a value analyst engineer in the locomotive division of GE. Later he became a purchasing manager in that division, and from 1973 to 1974, he served as president of the Purchasing Management Association of Erie. He was a longtime member of the G.E. Apprentice Alumni and the Griswold Club. Don led a full and active life. A devoted husband and father, he especially enjoyed dancing with his wife and traveling with his family. He was an expert handyman and craftsman, and built play equipment for his children. He greatly enjoyed golf and bowling, as well as public speaking. Don and Mildred were long-time members of St. George Parish. For 25 years he managed the schedule of the team from St. George's who volunteered at the Emmaus Soup Kitchen. He and Mildred worked regularly at Emmaus. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mildred; his son, William; his brothers, Eugene, Jack, Robert, and Martin; and his sisters, Helen and Maxine. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou (Verne Perry) and Ann St. John (Richard); two sons, Jack (Jacqueline) and Mark; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Sarah and Elizabeth Carlson, Kathleen St. John, and Sergei and Valentina Perry; and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call on Saturday, June 1 at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. from 9:30 a.m. until a prayer service at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. at St. George Church, 5145 Peach Street, Erie, PA 16509. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. George Church and/or to Emmaus Soup Kitchen, 218 East 11th St., Erie, PA 16503.
