Sherman Abernethy Bradley arrived in Milwaukee from Connecticut in the late 1850s, working first as a carpenter. Later in his career he was a pumpmaker, a wood planing mill co-owner and a lumber dealer. He was proprietor of the Badger Pump Manufactory, and co-owner of the Brockhaus & Bradley planing mill. He also was a purchasing agent for Wm. Willer's Sash, Door and Blind Factory in the early 1880s.

He married first in 1859 Ann Maria "Hannah M." Church of Milwaukee, oldest daughter of Benjamin F. Church, Milwaukee pioneer carpenter and builder and his wife Permilia. Their son was Jesse Charles Bradley who married Caroline Belle Speich. Sherman married second in 1882 Mary Schneider of Plymouth, Wisconsin, daughter of Frederick Schneider and Christiana Neeb.

Sherman was the son of Leaming Hawkins Bradley and Mary Simmons of Litchfield County, Connecticut.

His ancestral Bradley lineage descends from Stephen Bradley, born in 1642 in Yorkshire, England, who arrived in New Haven, Connecticut, in the mid-1640s with his mother and siblings. His great-grandfather was Aaron Bradley who served in the Revolutionary War in Litchfield, Connecticut. His Bradley lineage in America is Stephen, Abraham, Abraham, Leaming, Aaron, Horace, then father Leaming Hawkins Bradley.

Most records created in his lifetime show Sherman's birth year as 1835, but his death certificate and grave marker show 1831.
