Miriam Dennett Cope
October 4, 1926 – May 7, 2013
In the early morning hours of Tuesday May 7, our wonderful Miriam passed peacefully from this life.
Miriam was born October 4, 1926, and grew up in Springdale, Utah, on the family farm. She was the youngest of 10 children born to John and Malinda Hepworth Dennett. She learned to work very hard and it served her well for the rest of her life.
She married Gene Cope in 1945, and had two children, Kathyrn and Bruce. For many years we lived in Elko, Nevada where she was a waitress at the Ranch Inn Hotel . She served Bing Crosby, Burl Ives, and many other celebrities, which became cherished memories. We did a lot of fishing, hunting, parties, and playing cards with friends.
We moved to Salt Lake City when dad changed jobs, as owner of a Chevron gas station. She was a waitress at the Ristorante Della Fontana for over 30 years, from 1967 when it opened, until she retired at age 71, a year before it closed. She truly loved her customers and provided the best service possible. She was always so proud of that, and missed her regular customers and the people she worked with. She was still friends with several Fontana employees and, until recently, they continued to get together and have " Fontana cooking parties".
Miriam had many passions throughout her life. She loved to read, bowl, golf, hunt, fish, camp, quilt, crochet, sew, bake, can produce, and make raspberry jam. She grew wonderful vegetable and raspberry gardens, and shared the produce. She loved singing as a soprano with the Sweet Adelines in a quartet and with the chorus. Unfortunately she lost her voice to bronchitis and missed being able to sing. She loved going dancing and partying with friends. In the last few years she became involved in her LDS ward, enjoying the meetings, quilting, making new friends, and attending the temple.
Miriam loved her three granddaughters Briony, Chelsea and Heidi. She seldom missed Briony's numerous activities and loved them all, wishing Chelsea and Heidi lived closer, so she could go to their activities. She and Dad visited them in Oregon as much as possible. She was so happy when they moved here, so she could see them more often. When her great grandsons came along, Seth and Dane Kammerman ( Briony's sons) and Cruz Alger ( Heidi ‘s son), they brought her great joy. She loved every minute she spent with them, and they loved their Granny. She will be so missed by us all.
She is survived by her sisters: Marie Horsley ( Enoch, Utah ) and Nellie Prescott ( Lawndale, California ); daughter Kathyrn Jones (Taylorsville, Utah ); son Bruce (Sweet Home, Oregon); granddaughters Briony (John) Kammerman , Chelsea (Jason) Litzinger, and Heidi Cope; her precious great grandsons; and many extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Malinda; sisters Maggie Justet, LaVeta Jamison, Jennie Sweeney; and brothers Elwood, Adrian, Dell, and Stewart; ex-husband Gene Cope; and son in law Gary Jones.
Thanks for all the help from friends, neighbors, family, and Community Nursing Services in the last months, and St. Joseph's Villa in her last few days. Her big overworked kind heart finally wore out.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 14 from 6-8 p.m. at the Salt Lake City 10th LDS Ward Chapel, 420 South 800 East. Funeral services will be at the same location on Wednesday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing one hour prior. Graveside services will be at the Springdale, Utah cemetery on Friday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m.
"..you were loved very much and will be missed, but your pain is finally over and you can always be with your little boys as their guardian angel, with their great grandpa Gene, and grandpa Gary. We were blessed to be able to spend this time with you and the boys were blessed to have had their granny with them. Rest in Peace." Briony Jones Kammerman
