Walter Ray Carruthers, 73, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro from cancer.

Walter was born Sept. 19, 1932, to Harold Vane and Mary Augusta "Manor" Carruthers.
He married Barbara Marie Robinson Oct. 4, 1983, in Jackson, Mo., and she survives.

Walter was a retired carpenter. The last 18 years before he retired, he worked at Southern Illinois University after many years as a general contractor. He also served as an MP in the Army in Germany during the Korean conflict.

Other survivors include two sons by a previous marriage, Scott Ray Carruthers and friend, Cathy Brooks, of Paducah, and Jeffrey Allen and wife, Tammy, Carruthers of Iowa; four stepsons and daughter-in-laws, Tracy Allen and Rhonda Sue Robinson of Pomona, Charles Wesley and Sandy Robinson, and John Ray and Barbara Ann Robinson, of Murphysboro, and Paul Brian and Robin Robinson of Carbondale; one step-daughter Jody Dawn Perschbacher and husband, David, of Fayetteville, N.C.; ...

He has one sister, Mary Ruth Kenshalo of Kansas City, Kan., and three brothers and sister-in-laws, John and Helen of Tamaroa, Harry and Helen of Boise, Idaho, Steve and Iris of Momence; one brother-in-law, Bill Cowsert of Elizabethtown and one sister-in-law, Peggy, of Boise, Idaho.

His parents, two brothers, O. Earl and Luther "Pete," one sister, Francis Sue Cowsert and one great-granddaughter, Lilianna Rosene, preceded him in death.
