James Afton Harward was born in Aurora where he received his education. He worked at Ironton for 32 years, retiring in 1962. He has held many positions in the LDS Church.

He married Essie Knight March 28, 1924 in the Manti LDS Temple. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Orem where they lived for 39 years.

They had six [living] sons; James DeVere Harward, Chester, Sanpete County; Darr D. Harward, Salt Lake City; Conrad A. Harward, Surrey, British Columbia; Sherman D. Harward, Loomis, Calif.; Russell L. Harward, Sioux Falls, N.D.; and Eldon K. Harward, American Fork. They have 23 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
