He was born Aug. 21, 1933, in Anderson, the son of Claude and Minnie Dean.
He graduated from Minnesota Bible College (Now Crossroads College) in May of 1960. He was ordained into the Christian ministry at the Bethany Christian Church on June 5, 1960. He held pastorates in Illinois, Indiana, Florida and Michigan as well as managing a Zondervan Family Book Store in Cleveland, Ohio. He was chairman of several different ministerial groups. Darrell was among the first to organize and serve on the Board of Christ Korean Missions (now known as C.R.A.M. Worldwide, Inc.). He wrote several tracts and programs on evangelism and church leadership. During the course of his ministry, he held numerous revivals, both as evangelist and soloist. He was an accomplished ventriloquist, spoke to many groups and appeared on Fort Wayne, Ind., TV. He loved to sing, and was part of many vocal ensembles and quartets throughout his life. Dean was inducted into the 1997 and 1998 National Who?s Who of Executive and Professional People. He served as elder at the Bethany Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. Dean; daughters, Tamara D. Spicer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Cheryl L. Dean of Seattle, Wash.; a son, Stephen M. Dean of Anderson; sister, Garnet A. Carpenter of Anderson; grandchild, Brooke Nicole Spicer of Cincinnati; nieces; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Jean (Hamilton) Dean; his father, Claude M. Dean; mother, Minnie B. Dean; brothers, Loren Dean and Ervin M. Dean; and a sister, Harriet A. Tucker, all of Anderson.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Christian Church, 1920 N. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by Bob Bell and Kent Stookey. Burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson, and one hour prior to the Tuesday service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Christian Church Building Fund.
