Northwest Blade, Eureka, SD, May 2, 1979 —

Leonard C. Sayler, 85 Aberdeen, SD, died Saturday, April 28, at St. Luke's hospital. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Plymouth Congregational Church (UCC) with Rev. Jack Brooks officiating. Burial was at Riverside Memorial Cemetery. Huebl Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Organist was Jude Borgesen and the soloist was Tom Wagner.

Leonard Christian Sayler, was born at Freeman on April 8, 1894 to Christian and Amelia Ganske Sayler. When he was young he moved with his family to a homestead five miles northeast of Hosmer.

In 1910, he enrolled at the Redfield College Academy and received his high school diploma there in 1914. He then returned to the Hosmer area to farm and teach school. On Sept. 21, 1917, he was inducted into the Army at Leola, and he served in the Army of Occupation in France from June 1, 1918 until Aug. 15, 1919, and then, received his honorable discharge on Aug. 24, 1919 at Camp Dodge, IA. After his Army service he enrolled at Northern Normal in 1921, and received his two-year certificate there in 1924, and his B.S. in Education in 1926. After graduating from there, he became Country Superintendent of Schools in McPherson County for a two year period. In 1928, he was elected McPherson County Auditor and Treasurer for the next 24 years.

He was married to Hulda Retzer on Sept. 11, 1931 at Eureka and they lived at Leola until 1948 when the family moved to Aberdeen. He was employed by various businesses and also managed some farm holdings until his retirement.

He is survived by one son, Gerald, Aberdeen; two daughters, Geraldine Jordre, Platte, and Marie Getsman, Sacramento, CA; five grandchildren; one brother, William Sayler, Eureka; and two sisters, Wilhelmina Lehr, Roscoe, and Mrs. Christ (Ann) Gutjahr, Denver, CO.

Casket bearers were Richard Van Beek, Walter Hoffman, Eugene Lehr, all of Aberdeen, Loven Stoecker of Tolstoy, Oliver Hoffman of Ipswich, and Frank Getsman of Aberdeen.
