Son of William Laurence Banister and Mary Catherine Miller, Sylvester was born in Montague County, Texas in 1889. He was the half-brother of historically noted Texas Ranger, John Riley Banister, and is mentioned in the book "Banister Was There" by Leona (Banister) Bruce (pg. 141). It reads:
'The address of his [John Riley Banister] half-brother Vester {Sylvester} Banister is give as Upton, N.M., and below is a short biography of Lawrence Banister, father of them both. "Lawrence Banister was born August 10, 1833, and died Jan. 12, 1898, aged 64 years, 5 months, and 2 days. He was born near Barthola, Indiana, and died near Mangum, Oklahoma. He had served in Captain Frizzell's Company, Col. Sweet's Regiment, from Thorp Springs; was wounded twice at Tunsill's Ferry, Arkansas. L.S. Hughes of Mangum, Oklahoma, was the father of Henrietta Banister."'

Sylvester married Pearl Jerman December 13, 1909 at Upton. They had 13 children.
