Mateland Baltzegar Brown

Mateland Baltzegar Brown, 89, of Norway, widow of James M. Brown Sr., passed away at Palmetto Heart Hospital on Monday, April 1, 2013. She is now at peace with her Lord.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Barry Morehead and the Rev. William Jacques officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons, and Dock Jamison and Willie Freeman.

Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Leo and Clara McMillan Baltzegar. She joined Willow Swamp Baptist Church as a young child. She attended Norway schools. She married James M. Brown at an early age, and they had six children. After marrying James, she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Adult Sunday School Class and enjoyed their many trips together. She worked many years at Salley Manufacturing Company, retiring to care for her husband and work in their hardware and lumber store. After his death, she and her sons built a new store, Browns Millwork and Builders Supply. She owned and operated it until a few years ago when she turned it over to her son Jimmy and Candy Brown. She still worked at the store when she could, and went mostly to sweep the floor (even if it didnt need it).

She leaves fond memories to her children, daughters, Ann (Wayne) Griffith of Neeses, Myree (Bob) Steele of Columbia and Joyce (Tom) Bochette of Maggie Valley, N.C.; sons, Jimmy (Candy) Brown of Norway and Charlie (Billie Faye) Brown of Orangeburg. She also leaves precious and humorous memories to her 10 grandchildren, Julian Wayne Griffith Jr. of Columbia, Lisa (Bruce) Judy, Janice Bair (Carl Rawleigh) and Kenneth (Scherry) Griffith, all of Neeses, Greg Steele and Sara (Josh) Todd, all of Columbia, Tammy (Mike) Whetstone of Cope, Robert (Joni) Brown of Norway, Sally Brown Hutto of Lexington and Michael (Ashley) Brown of St. Matthews. She leaves 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; a sister, Jean Bair of St. Matthews; a brother, Jack (Elaine) Baltzegar of West Columbia; a special niece, Elaine (Julian) Porter of Neeses; a special friend of many years, Mrs. Rosebud Milglaro; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a baby boy; three sisters, Baby Gladys Baltzegar, Juanita Berry and Vera Mount Wilson; and two brothers, Roger Baltzegar and Bobby Baltzegar.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North (www.mcalhanyfh.com) and other times at the home of Jimmy and Candy Brown, 140 Brownville Lane, Norway.
