Sometime prior to her 14th birthday, Mamie's father William passed away and by 1910, all her siblings except for older brother Gene were gone. They were then living with her widowed mother still in the area of Howard. Her brother was selling real estate, Mamie attended school.
A few years later, at the age of sixteen, Mamie wed Mr. Clyde R. Hill and the couple moved off to Houston County near the town of Marshallville where in 1920 they can be found living along Marshallville Road. There, her husband Clyde was working as a watchman for a local crate-building company.
Mamie was now twenty-four and had two children of her own, little Celia Ralph, who was five and two year old Hugh.
Ten years later, in 1930, they had moved across the county line into Peach County, where they could be found in the city of Ft. Valley. Here Clyde had found employment for the railroad and was working as a "pumper". They live on Railroad Street in that town. They now had three additional children, a daughter, Mamie who was 10 and three more sons, Flem Edwin 7, William Roy 4, and baby Marvin Carl who was one.
Per the 1940 census, the family was living still in Ft. Valley. Her husband was still working for the railroad and a few of their children were still living with them, including her son Ralph who had wed and brought his wife to live with them, and then there was her daughter Mamie, and sons Flem, William Carl, and Marvin. (Sadly, her son Hugh was killed in a boating accident in October of 1939.)
It should be noted that a Social Security claim dated in Dec., 1963 listed her name as being Mamie Leverett Hill (Mamie Leverett Hamilton Hill).
