he was a licensed funeral director and a former co-owner and operator of Smith-Tillman Morutary. He was a charter inductee of the Georgia Southern University Sports Hall of Fame, was a member of the board of directors of First Bulloch Bank and Trust Co. and was a member and past-president of the Statesboro Rotary Club.
He was a former chairman of High Hope Foundation and was instrumental in securing the land and funding for the current High Hope facility. He was a member of Thompson's Pasture Hunting Club, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a past recipient of a Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award. He was a member of Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Fay Foy Smith, Statesboro; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Fay Foya nd Jimmy Franklin, Statesboro, Beth and Don Comer, Raleigh, N.C., and Ann Smith, Atlanta; a daughter-in-law, Paula Banks Smith, Statesboro; three sisters, Mrs. Clyde Gowen, Folkston, Mrs. Olin Franklin, Athens, and Mrs. Jack Jenkins, Atlanta; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, with Elder George Daunhauer officiating, assisted by the Rev. Don Adams. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Viewing will be at the family residence, 338 Savannah Ave., beginning this afternoon.
