Ray was born on September 20, 1950, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Palmer and Delores (Mullenix) Atwood. He grew up in Sioux Falls and spent most of early years of school traveling to three states performing as a four square dancer in the Dakota Cloggers. Shortly after this, he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968. After graduation, he began working at John Morrell and Co. and later enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve where he served in Vietnam as a front line medic until 1971. In 1971, he returned to John Morrell where he worked as a mechanic for 25 years.
On April 12, 1975, he was united in marriage with Vicky Ripley in Luverne, MN but remained in Sioux Falls the remainder of his life. Shortly after their marriage, he attained an Associates Degree in Business and was valedictorian of his class from the National College of Business in 1977.
Ray was a lifetime member of VFW post 628 in Sioux Falls. He retired from John Morrell in 2000 due to health issues. After retirement, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, playing poker, listening to oldies music with his wife, cheering on the Chicago Bears, daily talks with Uncle Harley about politics and spending time with friends and family.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Vicky; children, Chad (Krisiti) Atwood of Crooks, Nick Atwood (Stephanie Vavruska) of Sioux Falls, Jenny (Nick) Thiel of South Fork, CO, Jesse Atwood (Aleah Van Dusen) of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, McKenzie, Parker, and Aubrey; two sisters, Bertha Clark of Elkton and Bev (Rodger) Lee of Elk Point; many dear relatives and friends.
