___ FUNERAL SERVICES FOR JAMES RANES ___ HELD IN MISS0URI

Mr. Ranes' death occurred Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Smith in Cincinnati, [Ia] where he had been making his home since the death of his wife, Joanna, last March. Death was the result of pneumonia, which developed after Mr. Ranes suffered a broken hip in a fall Tuesday morning a week ago. [Mrs. Smith has suffered the loss of her mother, father, and husband, all in the past ten months.] The deceased was the grandfather of Mrs. Ethel Swanson of this city (who had been in Cincinnati since last Thursday helping care for him) and Jimmy Smith, also of Centerville, and Mrs. Neva Mitchell of Seymour. He also had many other relatives residing in this, and the Moulton vicinity. The deceased was a highly respected and well-known citizen in the Unionville community, and is mourned by numerous friends as well as members of his family.(Excerpted from 2-12-1936, Iowegian)

James C. Ranes was born in Putnam county, Missouri December 21, 1860 and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lola Smith, in Cincinnati, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1936 at the mature age of 85 years, 1 month, 19 days. He was united in marriage with Miss Joanna Valentine on August 21, 1873, who preceded him in death on March 23, 1935. To their union were born four children, two preceded parents in death. Mrs. [Isa] -- Newell January 21, 1927 and Mrs. Fred Newell --April 17, 1913; the two living are Mrs. Lola Smith of Cincinnati, Iowa, and Aljo Ranes of Unionville, Mo. He is mourned in death by one son, one daughter, 20 grand children, 20 great grand children and one great great grand child; two sisters—Mrs. Mary Schoonover of Pollock, Mo., and Miss Anna Ranes of Lemons, Mo., two brothers—Jack of Centerville, Iowa, and Willis of this city. Mr Ranes lived his entire life in Putnam county. He was one of Putnam's sturdy farmers till the year of 1919. He sold his farm to his son [Aljo], and bought property in the City of Unionville, locating in March of that year, which has been his home from that time. Since the death of his devoted wife he has made his home with his children. He became a member of the Christian church in this city in the year 1920, and retained his faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He was of a home-loving, quiet, unassuming disposition, kind and always ready to help those in need. He was also a member of the Unionville Masonic Order of this city. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday, Feb. 11. at one thirty, conducted by J. D. Noland, the body was laid to rest in Unionville cemetery by the side of his life long companion.
