Waverly Journal, Date Unknown

James Hollenshade Christopher, son of John and Jane Christopher, was born in Preble Co., Ohio, May 30, 1838, and died at his home in Waverly, Ill. at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1912, aged 74 years. In 1843 he came with his parents to Illinois and settled at Jerseyville where he grew to manhood and where he was married Nov. 16, 1859 to Parthena A. Anderson who survives him. For four years they lived on a farm when in 1864 they moved to Virden, Ill. where he engaged in business until 1880 when he came to Waverly. Here he engaged in the implement and Hardware business in which he continued as a highly respected business man having as an associate in the business, his son Frank until the latter's death a little over three years ago.
About six years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered, tho he got able to get about town with his cane and was a familiar figure on our streets.
In April 1911 he was prostrated by a second stroke and since that time has not walked unaided, being confined to his bed or his chair. And thru these later years of affliction he has been faithfully and tenderly ministered to by his devoted wife who is left sorely bereft at his going.
He leaves also one son, Edward A. of Portland, Oregon whose grief is greater that he is not able to be here at this time to comfort his mother; one grandson also is left, Edward J. of this city. Besides these there remains of his father's family, three brothers and two sisters; Jacob Christopher of Wichita, Kas; Adam of Jerseyville; Edward of Bucklin, Kas; Mrs. Helen Anderson of Denver, Colo; and Mrs. Henry Whyte of Jerseyville.
Funeral services were held at the home Friday, August 165h, at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. A. N. Simmons pastor of the M. E. church, and interment made in East cemetery.
