Henry was the son of Oregon Trail settlers Isaac Charleton Laymance and Susan Miller. He first married Emma A. Morris in 1882, and she died in 1886. His 2nd wife was Ada Belle Bruner, and they had Rosella and Henrietta.

In the spring of 1888 Henry came to Douglas County, Washington Territory. He travelled as far as Ellensburg by railroad and then by stage coach over Colockuna Pass to Waterville and settled on a homestead five miles from Waterville.
