Simon N. Schell, former judge of the Cole County Court and one of the best known and beloved residents of Central Missouri, died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home in St. Thomas following an illness of more than a year due to a complication of diseases. Funeral services will be held at 930 o'clock Friday morning at the St. Thomas Catholic Church and burial will be made in the cemetery at that place.

Mr. Schell was 88 years of age, was born near Taos but moved to St. Thomas when but a young man. He engaged in the stock raising business there with Anton Hopen and also established a general shoe and mercantile store. More than 62 years ago he married Miss Elizabeth Wankum of St. Thomas, who survives him. The couple celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in April, 1923.

Mr. Schell, possessing a pleasing personality and sterling character, soon became prominent and popular over all the county. He entered the arena of politics and was elected as a district county judge, which office he held for four years. Later he served as presiding judge of the Cole Court for four more years. Other offices and honors would have been his for the asking had he not preferred his simple life at St. Thomas.

Few men in Central Missouri had more real friends than had Judge Schell. He numbered his acquaintances by the thousands and his passing will occasion sadness and sorrow in every county household. He was a kind and loyal father, a loving and tender husband. He was a consistent member of the Catholic Church, a progressive citizen in the front van of every movement for the betterment of the county. His death is a distinct loss to the community in which he lived and loved and wrought for so many years.

Judge Schell is survived by his wife and six children. They are George W., Sam C., and Mrs. John Muchlenkamp of St. Thomas, I.W. Schell and Mrs. J.S. Schwieterman, St. Elizabeth and Peter J. Schell, proprietor of the Schell Music Store of this city.

Judge Schell was well known in the Capital City and a large number of local citizens expect to attend the funeral services at St. Thomas tomorrow.
