While on the ship Italy, she met her future husband, Carl Wik (Wick). His destination was Chicago and it became her destination also. They were married in the First Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church on Sept 18, 1883.
The couple relocated to River Falls MN. By 1895, they had four daughters and two sons. By 1902, one son and three daughters had been added to the family.
In 1903 Emma's husband Carl passed away at the age of 49, leaving her with 10 children and little money. In April of 1904, Emma was committed to the State Hospital at Fergus Falls, her mind having failed from the responsiblity of being left a pauper with ten children to care for.
On July 10, 1905, fifteen months after her commitment, Emma passed away at the age of 44 years.
