SABETHA - Ray A. "Pat" Longberg, 82, Sabetha, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Cobblestone Court Residential Care in Sabetha. Local survivors include his son, Jack Longberg, Topeka; and daughters, Patricia Davidson, Topeka, and Jane Eppens, Hiawatha. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Burial will be in Sabetha Cemetery. A family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice or to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University and sent in care of the funeral home.

Ray Alvis "Pat" Longberg, 82, died Sunday, December 21, 2003, at Cobblestone Court Residential Care of Sabetha.

He was born at Soldier on March 14, 1921, the son of Clinton Arthur and Lena Belle Hanna Longberg. He attended schools in Soldier and completed the 10th grade.

A World War I veteran, Mr. Longberg entered the U. S. Army in August 1942 and served in Germany and Washington D.C. until his discharge in February 1946. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 7285 and John L. Palmer American Legion Post No. 126, both of Sabetha.

He drove a truck for Ed and Bill Bauman and later Transit out of Omaha, Neb. He also drove a milk truck for Richard Bestwick. He drove trucks for more than 20 years total. In 1966 he began work for the city of Sabetha light plant, where he worked for nearly 19 years before his retirement.

He married Doris Alberta Sharrah at Fairview on January 25, 1948. She died on February 6, 1996.

A sister, Dorothy Hill; three brothers, Floyd, Glen and Harry Longberg, and a grandson, Dennis Robert Campbell, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Jack Longberg and wife Ann of Topeka; two daughters, Jame Eppens of Hiawatha and Patricia Davidson of Topeka; a brother, Richard "Ben" Longberg of Wichita; three sisters, Della Antes of Effingham, Mildred Bauman and husband Joe of Oneida, and Gladys May Renyer and husband Duane of Wakarusa; a sister-in-law, Parthena Longberg of Council Grove; a brother-in-law Ed Hill of Soldier; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 27, at Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Interment was in the Sabetha Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Sabetha V.F.W. Post 7285 and the American Legion Post 126.
