He was the son of the late Alfred and Nettie Hill Cantley, who lived on Chapp's Fork Road, Elk District. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Hildree Cantley, a school teacher who lived on Little Sandy Road, Elkview. He also was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and James Cantley.
He leaves a loving wife, Beulah Munson Cantley. They were married on March 24, 1945. She is the granddaughter of Daniel Webster and Beulah (Cox & Greenleaf) Cunningham. Her parents were Pearl Cunningham and Raymond Munson.
He was a member of the Coopers Creek Advent Christian Church. Over the years, he was a Sunday school superintendent, youth and adult teacher and served as an elder for 17 years. He was a trustee for the church and Camp Whitney, which was a place he dearly loved, especially helping the youth and fixing up the church camp.
Otto attended Elk District schools, graduating in 1933. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1942. He went to TWA training school in Kansas City, Mo., in 1942. He was in the 14th Ferrying Group in Africa and attached to the 38th Army Engineer Group. He went to Leopoldville, Belgian Congo and later was sent to Accra Air Base and stayed there 18 months. He became a crew chief and when he had become a tech. sgt., he continued his schooling at Buffalo, N.Y., when he returned to the states. After being married, he and Beulah went to Rose Crans Air Force Base in St. Joseph Mo., where he was in charge of aircraft maintenance until the end of the war. He served 33 months in all.
He managed OV Smith General Store while the Smith boys were getting their education. He then was the manager of Southern States Feed and Seed store for the next 12 years. Then from 1965 to 1981, he first managed OV Smith's furniture and appliance store and then later became salesman for them in Big Chimney.
He was a soil conservation for Kanawha County for many years, elected by the landowners. He was also a member of the Regionai Development Authority of Kanawha County and a member of the American Legion.
The family will have a private graveside service at the Cantley Family Cemetery, Coopers Creek.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston with Pastor Paul Ramsey, from the Coopers Creek A.C. Church, assisting.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston.
