Susan was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Sherard Austin Tatum,Jr. and sister, Sarah Elizabeth Tatum Andress. Survivors include her husband, James Kimbell "Bubba" Hays; three sons, David Lee Hays; Kimbell Tatum Hays and daughters, Tatum Deanne and Claire Taylor; Clayton Sherard Hays, wife Trudy, and daughters Jewelyn Elizabeth and Mary Katherine; brother, Richard Max Tatum and wife Janice. She is also survived by a many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Susan was a graduate of Hockaday School in Dallas and Southern Methodist University, where she was a Pi Beta Phi. Following college she taught in a number of schools with an emphasis in English and Spanish. She was currently teaching English and Spanish at Claiborne Academy.
There was never a more loving and devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother than Susan, and she gave unselfishly to her family. There were loyal lifelong friends with whom she enjoyed traveling and who enriched her life with those special times.
The First United Methodist Church was her church home, and she was a faithful lifetime member there, often participating in seasonal musicals. During her teenage years she was a duchess in the Holiday In Dixie Cotillion. She also was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.Pall Bearers will be her nephews.
