Dr. Sherard Austin Tatum, Homer
Physician And Surgeon Dies
Dr. Sherard Austin Tatum, physician and surgeon, and mayor of the town of Homer died at his home on Lake Claiborne Sunday.
Dr. Tatum was born in Sharon Jan. 5, 1908. He was the son of Sidney Seth Tatum and Alberta Augusta Tatum, pioneer settlers and builders of Claiborne and Lincoln Parishes. Dr. Tatum graduated from Dubach High School, Louisiana College and Tulane University Medical School. He practiced medicine in Homer for more than 40 years. He was extremely active in civic and community affairs, church and was a former member of the board of Confederate Memorial Hospital, a member of the American Medical Association, Louisiana State Medical and Southern Medical Society and was also a member of the Advisory committee for the establishment of the Louisiana State University Medical School in Shreveport.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church at Homer at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial was at the Arlington Cemetery in Homer under the direction of Davidson Funeral Home.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Sherard Austin Tatum Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee and Richard Max Tatum, now serving in the U.S. Navy at Oceanside, California; two daughters, Mrs. Thad Andress of Minden and Mrs. James K. Hays of Homer; and seven grandchildren.
