Marlene Elizabeth Kruger, 71, of Carlisle, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in the Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.

Born on March 15, 1938, in Plainfield, she was a daughter of the late Edward A. and Esther Wickard Hays.

Marlene was a 1956 graduate of Carlisle High School, which was the first graduating class in the new school. She was previously employed by McCroy's, Hunt Crystal, Montgomery Ward, Krugers Dairy, Carlisle Area School District, Carlisle Tire and Rubber and Carlisle Syntec.

Marlene was a member of the Brethren in Christ Church, Carlisle, for over 35 years. She was a member of ABWA, Yellow Breeches, for 26 years with perfect attendance; a member and past president of the Y's menettes; and a member of AARP. She was active with the Girl Scouts serving over 60 years, and holding various positions, most notably as Service Unit Director with 20 plus troops. Through her work she set up a scholarship to send girls to camp and she received the prestigious "Curved Bar Award" and the Thanks Badge for outstanding service and dedication. She was also a member of the Carlisle Garden Club and was involved in the Carlisle Band Boosters. Marlene was a direct descendent of "Molly Pitcher" Hays McCauly.

Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Charles Kruger; two sons, Bryan (and his wife, Heidi) Shatto of Carlisle and Kevin (and his wife, Suzanne) Shatto of Lancaster; a daughter, Leslie Shatto of Mechanicsburg; a stepdaughter, Cathy Wilson of Poplarville, Miss.; a stepson, Craig Kruger of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Edward Hays of Carlisle, Robert (and his wife, Mary Ann) Hays of Carlisle and Randy (and his wife, Sandy) Hays of Carlisle; a sister, Marion Cone of Carlisle; five grandsons; a stepgrandson; and a stepgreat-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margarite Righter

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the Brethren in Christ Church, 1155 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle, with the Rev. Alan Robinson and the Rev. Kenneth Hoke officiating. Burial will be held in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Churchtown.
