Martin was raised in Pakenham in Lanark County, Ontario during the 1850s and 1860s. In the 1871 Ontario Census, 28 year old Martin worked as a laborer and lived with his brother 32 year old Thomas' family in Pakenham. When Martin and Anne were married by Reverend James Stewart on July 11, 1873 in Parkenham and it was witnessed by his brother Edward. Martin's Religious Denomination was of the Church of England and Anne's was Presbyterian.

In 1879, the family emigrated from Canada to Bay City, Michigan. In the 1880 Census, 32 year old Martin and 25 year old Anna's family lived in the 5th Ward of Bay City on 17th Avenue. Martin worked as a sawyer in 1881 and lived at the northeast corner of Fitzhugh and 21st. In 1883, the family lived at 921 Fitzhugh and Martin was a plumber.

Martin and Anne's family moved to 804 South Monroe in 1889 and lived there for many years. Martin worked for Watson and Topsell when he died in 1895 from Typhoid Pneumonia at the age of 40 and lived in the 8th ward of Bay City. He was survived by his widow and six children.

Martin and Anna's six children include Mary Jane, Edgar or Edward who was born in 1877 in Canada and he married Mina McKay December 21, 1898, Anna who married Lewis Warren, Harriet who married Roland Schaefer, Maud who married Evered Weaver, and Myrtle Ivy Johnston who married Robert Fulton Landis May 30, 1907 in Bay City.
