Top photo is of Lillie and Honey, her poodle. This photo and others of this family and newspaper clipping, was provided to me by Wendy Jarrell Kline (Lillie's great grand daughter).

Lillie was featured in a newspaper article in the Beckley newspaper (Raleigh Register August 27, 1967). She was a kind woman and very loved by her family and friends.

Lillie learned responsibility early in life due to the death of her mother when Lillie was nine years old. Her mother died of consumption in 1894. Lillie was born on a farm at Dry Creek, WV. Her father was a mason and blacksmith. Her "Golden Rule" of life was "do as you wish to be done by and you'll always come out on top".

According to Lillie during her childhood, few things needed to be bought at the store because everything was raised on the farm. Few items though had to be purchased.

Lillie stated when she was a little girl going to school, she had to walk four miles and the school term was only three and one half months long. She sat on home made benches at school.

People worked for fifty cents a day when she was a little girl. Her philosophy of life was that all persons were considered equal. "It doesn't matter who the richest man is in the cemetery." "After we all die, we are all equal in the sight of God."

Lillie Married James Alfred "Tom" Jarrell on December 4, 1902. He was a merchant at Naoma, Raleigh County, WV. According to Lillie at that time they had to borrow a dollar to pay for the license. Upon his retirement in 1957, they moved to Beckley, WV and sadly he died five months later.

As Lillie grew older and during the summer months, she said she enjoyed gardening and picking berries for making jelly. She also enjoyed fishing. In the winter months she enjoyed quilting and gave the quilts to her family and friends. She enjoyed music from Lawrence Welk to the Beatles.

Lillie was a friend to all who came to her door. She stated she wished she had something to give everyone who came to her door, especially the poor. If anyone ever came to my door hungry or in need, I could never turn them away because I may be turning God away.

Lillie and Tom were married 55 years until his death. They had 3 children together: Bert, Charlie and Pebble.
