At the age of 7, and at the outbreak of the Civil War, his parents moved from Jumping Branch VA (now WV) to escape the ravages of the Civil War. The family left per wagon to Kanawha Falls in Kanawha County. From there they boarded a steamboat to Cincinnati, Ohio. From Cincinnati they boarded a train to Muncey City Indiana where they lived until the Civil War ended in 1865. In 1865 they moved back to West Virginia to their home in Jumping Branch, but there was little left. They left Jumping Branch and settled at Dry Creek, West Virginia where William grew up, married, and raised his children. William (Bill Pap) married and built his home at Dry Creek. William had 15 children between two wives. He first married Sarah Margaret Burnside on December 30, 1875. They were married by Joseph N. Estep. After Sarah's death he married Rebecca Jane Clay.
Bill Pap grew up to be a mason and a blacksmith. Many of the homes in the Dry Creek and surrounding areas had chimneys that were built by Bill Pap. William had one son Billie Bradford that died at a very young age due to burns that he had suffered at home.
He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church at Dry Creek, WV where he had 14 years of perfect attendance.
