"Miss Caroline VanLiew of Tyrone died at the Gary nursing home in Lakemont on Sunday morning, May 18, 1947, aged 72 years. Funeral services were held in Tyrone Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon, the rev. Arnold Mellin officiating. Burial was in Tyrone cemetery.

Miss VanLiew was born Nov. 11, 1874, the eldest daughter of Edson and Mary Sunderline VanLiew, in the old homestead on Six Nations Hill that Miss VanLiew retained as her home until two years ago when illness compelled her to give up her own home and move to Tyrone where she was cared for by her sister, Mrs. Charles Howell.

She received her education in Dundee High School and Geneseo Normal School. Her work as an educator included teaching in the rural schools, the Dundee grade school, training class at Jordan and Onondaga Valley and serving as school superintendent in the Western Schuyler district for several terms. She started teaching school at the age of 16.

Miss VanLiew was a loyal member of Tyrone Methodist church, where she served as treasurer, teacher and missionary president. She was prominent in Grange work and in every effort for community betterment. She spent a busy, useful life, expending her energy and resources generously and unselfishly.

Surviving are four sisters: Mrs. Wilbur Mattoon of Takoma Park, D. C., Mrs. Louise Switzer of Painted Post, Mrs. Charles Howell and Mrs. L. D. Huey of Tyrone; twenty nieces and nephews." - Watkins Express, May 21, 1947.
