Miss Van Liew was born on December 26, 1886 in the home where she died, the seventh child of Edson and Mary Sunderlin Van Liew. She was graduated from Dundee High School later attending Syracuse University. She taught in the local rural schools as well as at Romulus, Ludlowville and Montour Falls, coming back home to assume the care of home after the death of her mother.
At the time of her passing she was serving her community as a member of the church board and teacher in the church school, superintendent of the home department and leader of a club of 4-H girls. She was affiliated with the Grange and had served several years as Chaplain and was now Chaplain of the degree team.
As a home maker she found her enjoyment, in partnership with her sister Miss Caroline Van Liew, in maintaining the beautiful old Van Liew homestead, renowned for its hospitality and genuine home atmosphere.
Loved and respected by all who knew her, a friend to all ages of people and an outstanding example of courageous Christian living. She is mourned by a wide circle of sincere friends.
Surviving are one brother and five sisters; Don of Reading, Pa., Miss Caroline Van Liew, Mrs. Catherine Mattoon of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Louise Swittzer, Mrs. Alice Howell and Mrs. Helen Huey who resided near the old home. She also leaves eleven nephews, eight nieces, two great nephews and nine great nieces." - Watkins Express, June 1937.
