Services Held for Fern Curry, 92

The funeral service for Fern S. Curry, 92, of Massena, was held Sunday, March 25, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at the Massena United Methodist Church. Mrs. Curry passed away quietly in her sleep at 1:55 a.m. on March 22, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Fontanelle.

Officiating at the service were the Rev. Robert D. Foster and the Rev. Mr. Fred Cornwell, Deacon. A eulogy was given by Sheila Williamson. Music was provided by Carolyn Groves, organist, and Sonja Gasper, Collette Shank, and Ashley Barnholdt, vocalists.

Pallbearers were Gerald Williamson, Craig Howard, Matthew Wilber, Mark Williamson, Brad Paulsrud, and Dean Meyer. Honorary bearers were Frank McMullen, Daniel Anderson, Ron Murray, Jim Follmann, Darwin Anderson, and Don Hartman. Diane Petersen and Nancy Cullen were in charge of flowers. Interment was in the Anita Evergreen Cemetery. Steen Funeral Home of Massena was in charge of arrangements.

Fern Sophia (Anderson) (Howard) Curry was born August 4, 1908 in Cass County, Iowa to Frank and Sophia (Brown) Anderson. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1927 with a normal training certificate to be a teacher. She taught in several rural, one room schools in Cass, Adair, and Adams Counties.

Fern and Harley Roy Howard of Anita were married in Oneida, Illinois on July 6, 1929. They had two children: Sheila Mae and Bill Roy Howard. They made their home in Anita. Harley died in 1938.

Fern married John Lewis Curry on February 3, 1940, and helped raise his children, who had lost their mother Kathryne in 1937. These step children included Barbara Ann, Donald Lewis, Kathryne Marie, Marion Jayne, and William Joseph. Fern and Lewis had two children, Colleen Cecilia and John Franklin. They lived on the family farm south of Massena in Victoria Township. Fern also lived for several years in the town of Massena.

Fern was a member of the Massena United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sharing meals with her friends at the Senior Citizens Meal Site. Fern worked hard at everything she enjoyed, including farm life, livestock, gardening, flowers, sewing, and quilting. She especially loved sharing memories of experiences with the family's horses, trail rides, horse shows and parades. Spending time with her family was very important to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Harley Howard and Lewis Curry; one brother, Adolph Anderson; five sisters: Lillie Nichols, Esther Hoover, Gladys Shrauger, Francis Brown-Bickel, and Segra Anderson; one great-grandson, Jared Williamson; one step-son, William Fleming and one step grandson, Nicholas Curry.

She is survived by two sons, Bill Howard and wife Judy of Clear Lake and John Curry and wife Coni of Massena; two daughters, Sheila Williamson of Des Moines and Colleen Wilber and husband Bob of Macedonia; three step daughters, Barbara Meyer and husband Ralph of Avoca, Nebraska, Marie Thayer and husband Les of Ankeny, and Jayne Gallagher and husband Bob of Omaha, Nebraska; one step-son, Don Curry and wife Dolores of Massena; 13 grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; many nieces and nephews; other relatives, friends, and neighbors.
