Earl W. York, Sr., age 88, of Gainesville, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2007. He was born in Eastern Tennessee on December 1, 1919. He retired from the U.S. Navy, having served in the fleet reserve in both Pacific and European Theaters during WWII and in the Korean Conflict. He also participated in the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests in 1946. York was a member of First Baptist Church of Alachua and the DAV. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eunice, son Earl W. "Bill" York, Jr. and wife Etta of Monroe, Ga., daughter Nancy Raughley and husband Harold of Alachua, two granddaughters, Anna and Erin Raughley, grandson Seth Raughley, great grandson Logan Raughley, sister Helen Gilliam of Clinton, TN., and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held on January 4, 2008, at Forest Meadows Memorial Park East, Military Garden of Honor, 3700 SE Hawthorne Rd. Gainesville, Fl. with Rev. Doug Felton officiating.
