After his service in the Civil War with the 55th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, he married, had a daughter, and was living in Illinois when his wife Anna Mary Martin Halbedel died abt. 1868 in Clark County, Illinois. With his young daughter Anna Lena (or Lena Anna) he moved to Clay County, Kansas about 1874.
