Charles Clay County, Kansas WW I Draft Registration of June 5, 1917 lists him as single, tall with a medium build, black hair and gray eyes.

From the US Transporting Service Arriving and Departing Passenger Lists, 1910-1939 --- Charles A Halbedel departed May 7, 1919 from Pauillac, France heading to the United States on the ship Martha Washington. His military unit: SUPPLY DETACHMENT 307th FIELD SIGNAL BATTALION, Rank: Chauffeur. Charles was honorably discharged from the United States Army May 26, 1919 at Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Kentucky.

The 1930 Five Creeks, Clay County, Kansas Census lists Charles A Halbedel, 41, and wife Alma R, 25, with children: Rosella, 4; Charles, 2; and John W, 1. Charles is working on his own account as an auto mechanic. ( Charles worked as an auto mechanic for a number of years, beginning before his service in World War I.) He owns his home valued at $600. Their family also owns a radio. Charles is a veteran of the World War.

Charles A Halbedel, 94, of Miltonvale, died Monday, June 6, 1983, at the Clay County Hospital. He was born April 25, 1889 on a farm near Miltonvale, the son of John and Julia Anthony Halbedel.

Charles was a retired farmer. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of the Miltonvale VFW, and had spent his lifetime in Clay and Cloud Counties. His wife Alma died October 22, 1957.

His survivors are two sons, Charles Halbedel of Miltonvale and John Halbedel of 809 Clay, Clay Center; three daughters, Rosella, Mrs. Roy Carlile of Woodburn, Oregon; Dixie, Mrs. Everett Ryan of Clay Center, and Julia Halbedel of Austin, Texas; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, June 9, in the Phelps Funeral Home with Duane Bulleigh officiating. Mrs. Wilburma Phelps was the organist, with Tom Phelps as soloist. Casket bearers were grandsons Dennis Ryan, Harvey Ryan, Samuel Ryan, Charles Carlile, Robert John Halbedel, and Edward Nicewander. Interment was in the Shields Cemetery.
