Garabed Der Avedisian was born between 1871-1873, likely in Arapkir, Turkey where his ancestors were from. He was the son of Pilbos and Antaram Der Avedisian who were from priestly families. Garabed had two brothers, Ohannes and Mugurditch. Garabed was first married to a woman named Asdghig who gave birth to a son Nubar but died young. Garabed's second wife was Zarmuhi Sirabian, married around 1911. By this time Garabed was living in Zonguldak, Turkey, where he was a very wealthy property and mine owner throughout the area. He was given the title Effendi because of his high position. Garabed and Zarmuhi's first daughter was named Shake' Der Avedisian Cerone (1912-1932), who died shortly after getting marrying. His second daughter was Artemis Der Avedisian Elbenkian (1915-1988), and a third daughter was Vartouhi Der Avedisian Azzopardi (1918-1993), who was the mother of Garabed's two granddaughters. Unfortunately, during the uphevals in Turkey around 1923, following the Armenian Genocide, the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and the rise of the Ataturk's republic of Turkey, the Turkish government confiscated all of Garabed's lands. After this he and his family moved to live quietly in Istanbul and adapted to their reduced circumstances. When he died in 1927 he was buried in a group grave in the Armenian cemetery on the hill of Rumeli Hisar. Apparantly the names of the people in it, including Garabed's, are listed on a stone above the grave. His wife Zarmuhi continued to live in Istanbul until her death in 1964.
