She was the daughter of Garabed Effendi Der Avedisian who owned the mines of Zonguldak, Turkey and his second wife Zarmuhi Sirabian. The family was wealthy but after the Armenian Genocide of 1915 their property was confiscated and they moved to Istanbul in very reduced circumstances. Chake and her sisters attended an Italian school in Istanbul, where she was likely was given the Italian name Isabella to use rather than her Armenian given name Chake. Her teacher Antonio Cerone proposed to her and they married, but Chake died shortly after the honeymoon at age 20 from an illness, likely tuberculosis.
