The son of Abner Jehu Paxton and Hester Elmore. Abner was born in 1817 and Hester was born in 1814; both were born in Botetourte County, Virginia.

Cephus was married October 16, 1866 to Sarah Jane Slack. They had 10 children:

The June 1900 census gives occupation as farm laborer.
April 1910; The West Virginia Insane Asylum, Ward 4, Huntington, Cabell Co., West Virginia.
