The son of Emanuel Hoover and Nancy "Anna" Wagaman, John married Sarah Ann Flake on 07 Nov 1865 in Bracken County, Kentucky. He was a farmer in Brooksville, and they were the parents of 10 children.

At the time of his death, John was 72 years, 7 months and 24 days old. He was buried on 13 Dec 1914 and was survived by his wife, Sarah.
