U.S. Navy spokesmen at Orange, Tex., today said the body of Virgil Clinton Hartley, twenty-year-old Marion sailor, had been recovered from the Sabine river. It was believed the youth slipped from a pier and fell into the water about 1 a.m. Sunday while on guard duty.
Capt. W. S. Campbell, fleet commander, said "it is assumed, pending investigation, that he slipped and fell from the vicinity of his sentry post and drowned."
Young Hartley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl E. Hartley, 1022 South Washington street.
The body is to be returned to 710 West third street, Marion.
The sailor was born in Marion and attended Marion High school where he played basketball on the reserve squad.
Seaman Hartley enlisted in March, 1949, and was serving with submarine group one, Texas group, Atlantic reserve fleet. Prior to enlisting in the navy, he was a member of the Indiana National Guard. At the time he enlisted, a brother, Dale, joined the U.S. Army and is now stationed in the Panama Canal Zone.
Survivors include the parents, the brother, and four sisters, Catherine, Phyllis, Maxine and Mary, all at home; and the grandparents, Mrs. Joseph Watson, Jonesboro and Edward S. Kinerk, Waynesdale, Ind.
