Hildegarde Bowman (Flagg) Marvel, 91, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, at Sunnyside Retirement Community, where she had been a resident since 1999.

Mrs. Marvel was born in Augusta County on May 15, 1913. She was raised by an uncle and aunt, Dr. and Mrs. D.P. Bowman of Crimora, Va., both of whom are deceased.

After being educated in Augusta County schools, Mrs. Marvel attended the School of Nursing at UVA Hospital. She later worked at Valley National Bank for 39 years as a teller and branch manager at the Cloverleaf bank, retiring as an officer in 1982.

She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church for 64 years. During those years, she was a Sunday school teacher, a deacon and an elder. In 1981, she was given the WOC Honorary Life Award for her many contributions to her church.

Mrs. Marvel was a former member of the Women's Club of Harrisonburg and also the BPW Club. For over 39 years, she was an active member of RMH Auxiliary, volunteering regularly every week. At her death, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 27 and the AARP. Her greatest purpose in life was to help people, especially older persons and to be actively involved in her church and community.

Her first husband of 39 years, Samuel B. Flagg, died in 1973. In 1983, she married William Elwood Marvel, who died in 1991,

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy F. Gill and her husband, Robert Gill, of Culpeper, Va., and a grandson, Andrew S. Gill of Fresno, Calif.; also a stepdaughter, Joyce D. Flory of Harrisonburg.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Joseph T. Sefcik.

A memorial service will follow at First Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. conducted by Dr. John F. Sloop and the Dr. Paul O'Gorek, chaplain at Sunnyside.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 Sunday evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home.
