Janos Szidor, (Americanized: John Seidor,) was born in Nagykapos, Hungary on September 19, 1895. His parents were István Szidor and Maria Bisztrai-Szidor. He was married to Rosalia "Roza" Bodnar in that town. By the time they emigrated to the United States, their town of origin was Veľké Kapušany, Slovakia. (Their ethnicity is always listed as "Magyar") On their records at Ellis Island, they are listed as Jan Szidor and Rosalia Szidor. Their town of departure was listed as Veľké Slemence, Slovakia.
John emigrated to the United States in 1921 on the SS Rotterdam. Roza emigrated in 1922 on The SS Volendam. (both out of Holland.)
They first settled in Uniontown, PA. They had three children there: John Barna, Helen Regina and Elizabeth Regina "Betty".
John planned to work as a coal miner, but when that fell through, he moved his family to Akron, Ohio to work at the B.F. Goodrich rubber factory. He lived at 1163 Dietz Ave. in Akron for the rest of his life.
As a young man in Hungary, he was a farmer, and tended to cattle. He was one of the smartest students in his high school class, and was asked to train to be a teacher. His father wouldn't allow it, because he needed his help on the farm.
John served for the Austro-Hungarian Empire in WWI ; he was shot in the leg, and captured by the Russians. John could speak Russian, so they used him as an interpreter and treated him well.
